Alston Park spans 157 acres in Napa with nearly 30 off-leash acres at the summit, making it a genuine destination for dogs who love open space and hiking. The park’s rolling hills are dotted with remnants of an old fruit orchard, and during late winter, gnarled plum trees burst into white blossoms that create a striking backdrop as you walk the trails with your dog.
The Prune Picker’s Trail forms a half-mile circuit through the park, giving you an easy option if you’re not up for a longer hike. If you want more distance, the Dry Creek Loop trailhead provides access to additional trails that wind through the landscape. Spring brings vibrant wildflowers that add color to the hillsides—worth timing your visit for if you can.
When your dog needs a break or you want a more controlled environment, Canine Commons is a well-maintained, fenced three-acre dog park where dogs can socialize and play together. It’s a good spot to let them interact while you catch your breath and take in the views.
The park has a gravel parking lot with no entrance or parking fees, which keeps it accessible for everyone. There’s no water available, so bring plenty for both you and your dog—especially important on warmer days when you’re hiking those exposed hillsides. You’ll want to pack your own picnic supplies too, though the ample space makes it easy to find a quiet spot to sit.
Off-leash rules can change seasonally, so it’s worth checking the current guidelines before you visit. Bring a camera if you’re into photography; the combination of the old orchard, wildflower blooms, and valley views provides good material year-round.
