Dog-friendly Bay Area spring getaways under 2 hours

The best dog-friendly weekends don’t require a full vacation day to get to. We put this list together for the Friday-at-5 crowd — Bay Area travelers who want to be walking the dog on a different beach or trail by 7 p.m. without losing the whole evening to the car.

Five spring escapes, all under two hours from San Francisco or Oakland in ordinary weekend traffic, all worth the drive, all dog-friendly to the marrow.

Half Moon Bay and Pescadero: 45 minutes, a different world

Cross the coastal hills and the air changes. Half Moon Bay is the closest real coastal escape to San Francisco, and it’s dog-welcoming in a way most California beach towns aren’t. The Coastal Trail runs for miles along the bluff behind the beach, and Pescadero, fifteen minutes south, is a backroad town of tide pools, brown pelicans, and farm-stand artichoke bread. Half Moon Bay Lodge and The Inn at Mavericks both take dogs. For a more rustic base, Costanoa at Año Nuevo does cabins, tents with beds, and trails from the door.

Healdsburg and the Russian River: Wine country without the crush

Napa is famous. Healdsburg is better. The town square is built for walking with a dog — shaded, compact, surrounded by tasting rooms that welcome well-behaved pups on the patio. Spring is the time: the vineyards are in bright leaf, the Russian River is running hard, and the town hasn’t hit its summer peak. h2hotel is the design-forward pick a block off the square, and Hotel Healdsburg is the classic play right across from it. Both welcome dogs. For a new spring trail opening worth chasing, see our story on Forestville’s new trail system twenty minutes west.

Calistoga and upper Napa: Hot springs and vineyard walks

If Healdsburg is the relaxed pick, Calistoga is the one to book when the dog needs a real decompress. The upper Napa Valley runs quieter than the stretch south of Yountville, the hills around the Palisades above town have a handful of dog-friendly trails, and the mineral pools are a reset button. Solage is the nicer option — cottages around a pool, dogs welcome, and the kind of quiet you don’t get in Napa proper. Meadowlark Country House is the boutique inn pick. Both book up fast for spring weekends.

Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast: Wild water, wide views

Bodega Bay is the Bay Area’s pressure valve whenever inland temperatures spike. The coastline north of the harbor runs empty for miles — Salmon Creek, Goat Rock, Wright’s Beach, Jenner at the mouth of the Russian River — and dogs are welcome on long stretches of the sand. Bodega Coast Inn & Suites is the straightforward pick, and Bodega Harbor Inn is the mellower cottage option. Layer up. The coast here runs cold into June, and the wind is part of the experience.

Santa Cruz and Pacific Grove: Monterey Bay, less commitment

Santa Cruz is 90 minutes from the East Bay and puts you on the northern edge of Monterey Bay without the Monterey traffic. Spring brings whales close to shore, the redwoods in the coastal range are at their deepest green, and the dog-friendly beaches south of the pier run for miles. Chaminade Resort & Spa sits on a hillside above town with a pet-welcoming policy and trails out the door. Edgewater Beach Inn and Suites is the easier pick if you want to walk to the wharf.

Pack light, go now

Spring weekends in these five places tend to book in waves: Healdsburg and Calistoga go first, Bodega and Santa Cruz follow, Half Moon Bay fills in last because people forget how close it is. If you’re thinking about any of them for April, May, or early June, book this week. Nothing on this list is more than two hours from home, but all of them feel like real trips the moment you step out of the car — which is the whole point of a dog-friendly weekend.
