The Always Inn occupies a converted Victorian-era home on a quiet stretch of Avenida Cabrillo, with period details—original hardwood, a wraparound porch, vintage wallpaper—that actually feel lived-in rather than aggressively restored. The location puts you two blocks from San Clemente State Beach and within walking distance of the downtown shops and restaurants along Avenida del Mar. The neighborhood has the low-key feel of San Clemente’s older residential core, not the sprawl.
Dogs stay in designated rooms, and the owners are straightforward about the arrangement: there’s a $25 nightly fee per dog. Your dog gets access to the room and the property grounds, including the yard out back, which has some shade from mature trees. Dogs aren’t permitted in the common breakfast areas or on the front porch during shared hours. The rooms themselves are small to modest—this is a bed-and-breakfast, not a resort—so if you’re bringing a large dog, confirm your specific room fits comfortably before booking.
The real advantage here is proximity to the beach. San Clemente State Beach, directly downhill, has a designated dog area where leashed dogs can walk and wade from roughly mid-October through April (the seasonal closure protects nesting areas). The town pier is a short walk, though dogs can’t walk it. Restaurants and cafes with patios line Avenida del Mar, where dogs are generally welcome to sit beside your table. The inn sits at about 150 feet elevation, so the walk to the beach is downhill on the way there and uphill returning—notable if your dog or you has mobility concerns. Parking is on-street or in a small lot; there’s no valet or dedicated dog parking, so you’ll be managing leashes in the small neighborhood streets. The breakfast is included with your room and served in the dining room; you’ll need to arrange something for your dog or eat in your room.
