Arroyo Burro Beach

2981 1/2 Cliff Dr., Santa Barbara, California 93109

Arroyo Burro Beach, often called Hendry’s Beach locally, sits just five miles west of downtown Santa Barbara along Cliff Drive—a scenic route worth taking on its own. The main draw here is straightforward: a long stretch of sand where dogs can legally run off-leash past the Arroyo Burro Slough, which means real freedom to chase waves and dig without constant leash management.

The setup does require some navigation. Dogs need to stay leashed through the parking lot and in the actual bathing beach area closer to the facilities. Once you pass the slough marker, though, the beach opens up considerably. You’ll see dogs of all sizes sprinting into the Pacific, shaking off in that cloud of saltwater spray that somehow always finds you, and testing their digging skills on the packed sand near the waterline.

The self-service dog wash stations run by Wripples, Inc. are genuinely useful after a session like this. A quick rinse removes most of the salt and sand before the drive home, which beats dealing with it caked into your car upholstery and your dog’s coat.

The surrounding area has picked up more dog-friendly dining options in recent years, with several places offering patio seating where dogs are welcome. The stretch along the coast between here and Montecito has grown increasingly dog-conscious, so you’ll likely find spots to grab lunch without leaving your dog tied to a table leg.

Parking can get tight on warm weekends, especially in summer, so arriving early gives you better odds of a spot close to the beach entrance. The terrain is straightforward—flat, wide, and easy to navigate even with an older dog or one not used to beach walking.

Wind patterns can shift dramatically through the afternoon, so the experience in early morning often feels completely different from late day. Checking conditions before you head out helps you plan whether your dog will be chasing balls in glass-calm conditions or dealing with sand being kicked everywhere.
