Dog-friendly Easter weekend getaways in California

Easter weekend is almost here, and if you haven’t locked in plans yet, don’t panic — California is packed with dog-friendly destinations where you and your pup can soak up spring without fighting for a reservation at the last minute. Here are three getaways that deliver on charm, walkability, and that all-important “dogs welcome” vibe.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: The gold standard

There’s a reason Carmel regularly tops every dog-friendly travel list in the state. This is a town that puts out water bowls the way other towns put out welcome mats. Carmel Beach — one of the few off-leash beaches on the Central Coast — is the main event. Your dog can sprint the white sand while you stare at cypress trees and try not to move here permanently.

Beyond the beach, downtown Carmel is built for strolling with a dog. Most shops keep treats at the counter, and restaurants along Ocean Avenue routinely set up patio seating with dogs in mind. For lodging, the town has a deep bench of hotels, inns, and cottages that genuinely welcome pets — not just tolerate them. Browse dog-friendly places to stay in Carmel to find the right fit for your crew.

If you have an extra day, the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is just five minutes south. Dogs are allowed on the Bird Rock Trail and the paved areas near Sea Lion Point — enough to stretch everyone’s legs with some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in California.

Santa Barbara: Beach town with a wine country bonus

Santa Barbara in early April is about as close to perfect weather as it gets — mid-60s, sunny, and not yet crowded with summer tourists. The Funk Zone neighborhood near the waterfront is a dog-friendly goldmine: tasting rooms, breweries, and restaurants with open-air patios where your dog can park under the table while you work through a flight of local pinot.

For beach time, Hendry’s Beach (officially Arroyo Burro Beach) is the local go-to for dogs. There’s an off-leash section, gentle surf, and the Boathouse restaurant right there if you want fish tacos with a view. East Beach and Leadbetter Beach also allow leashed dogs and are perfect for an early-morning Easter walk before the crowds arrive.

Santa Barbara’s dog-friendly beaches are just the start — the town also has excellent hiking in the foothills. Rattlesnake Canyon Trail and Inspiration Point are both leashed-dog-friendly and deliver sweeping views of the Channel Islands on a clear spring day.

Mendocino: Quiet, dramatic, and deeply dog-friendly

If your idea of Easter weekend is less brunch-and-beach and more fog-and-fireplace, head to the North Coast. Mendocino is a small Victorian village perched on a headland above the Pacific, and it’s spectacularly dog-friendly for a town this size.

The Mendocino Headlands State Park wraps around the village and offers miles of blufftop trails where leashed dogs are welcome. The views — sea caves, blowholes, wildflower-dotted cliffs — are some of the best on the entire California coast, and in early April you’ll likely have them mostly to yourself.

Nearby Big River Beach is another highlight: a wide, sandy estuary beach at the mouth of Big River where dogs can run off-leash below the tideline. You can also rent a canoe or kayak and paddle upriver through a tidal estuary — several outfitters allow dogs aboard.

Mendocino’s inns and B&Bs tend to be small and book up, so move fast. The upside is that many of them are genuinely dog-enthusiastic — expect dog beds, treats at check-in, and owners who know exactly which trails to recommend.

Book it before it’s gone

Easter weekend is one of the first big travel weekends of the year, and California’s best dog-friendly spots fill up fast. Wherever you land, book your lodging now, pack the leash, and give your dog the spring weekend they deserve.
