Arroyo Burro Trail

Arroyo Burro Trail

Arroyo Burro Trail

San Roque Rd., Santa Barbara, California 93105

(805) 724-0079

This hike is a challenge. It’s one of the rare front country hikes that has uphill both on the way up and on the way back, and all of it is steep. The full distance runs 12 miles, so you’re looking at a serious commitment. Starting from the Jesusita Trail trailhead in Mission Canyon, you’ll gradually work your way toward Arroyo Burro, gaining elevation relentlessly the entire way.

Poison oak is prolific throughout most of this route, so keep your dog close and stick to the center of the trail. Ticks are also active in spring, particularly in the brushy sections. The exposure can be intense once you’re higher up, and there’s not much shade, so an early start makes sense, especially on warm days.

The trailhead sits in Mission Canyon north of Santa Barbara. From the Mission at the corner of Laguna and Los Olivos Street, head up Los Olivos toward the mountains. The road jogs and becomes Mission Canyon Road. At the stop sign, turn left onto Foothill Road, drive about four-tenths of a mile, then turn right on San Roque Road. Pass the W. B. Carter Water Filtration Plant—you’ll see it on your left. Look for the large wooden sign marked “Jesusita Trail” on the left side; that’s your parking area. There’s also a dirt spur on the right that sometimes offers easier parking. Plan on about a 10-minute drive from downtown.

This isn’t a casual outing. Your dog needs to be conditioned for long distances and steep terrain. Bring plenty of water for both of you—there aren’t reliable water sources along the way. The views from higher elevations are excellent, but you’ll work for every one of them. The payoff comes at the end when you reach the cooler elevation and realize just how fit your legs have become.
