The Barker Pass North to Vista Point trail is a dog-friendly 3.5-mile round trip that works well for a half-day adventure from Tahoe City. You’ll be sharing the path with hikers and equestrians — this section serves double duty as part of both the Tahoe Rim Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, though mountain bikes aren’t allowed due to PCT regulations.
Getting there takes some navigation. From Tahoe City, head south on Highway 89 for four miles (or north from Tahoma for the same distance) and turn onto Blackwood Canyon Road at Kaspian Campground. The trailhead sits 7.5 miles up that road, so budget time for the drive on what can be a rough forest road.
The trail itself starts with a moderately steep climb for the first mile as you head west around Barker Peak’s south side. The reward comes quickly — open meadows filled with mule’s ears and expansive views down Blackwood Canyon toward Lake Tahoe itself. Your dog will appreciate the shade once you cross a small stream just past the first mile. The streamside is lined with wildflowers including asters, delphiniums, tiger lilies, and Indian paintbrush, making it a genuinely pretty spot.
After that water crossing, the grade eases into a gentler climb through open volcanic terrain mixed with red fir forest. The trail culminates at two volcanic plugs around the 0.5-mile mark from the stream crossing. These rocky outcrops offer solid wind protection and work perfectly for a picnic break while you take in the views.
The Tahoe Rim Trail continues beyond this point if you want to keep going, but factor in sunset timing carefully — you’ll want plenty of daylight to get back to your vehicle safely. The terrain is exposed in sections, so bring water for both you and your dog, especially on warm days.
