Dog-friendly Memorial Day weekend in California: 6 escapes

Memorial Day weekend is the starter pistol for California’s travel season. Mountain passes crack open, coastal fog softens, desert heat pushes travelers north — and every dog-friendly inn worth booking starts filling up six weeks out. That’s today.

The trick with this weekend is knowing where the crowds go and where they don’t. We’ve rounded up six dog-friendly escapes that balance beauty and breathing room, each with real places to stay and a reason to pick it. Book soon. By early May, the rooms we’d actually recommend are usually gone.

North Lake Tahoe: Lake’s up, crowds aren’t yet

The south shore gets the convention buses. The north shore — Kings Beach, Tahoe City, Carnelian Bay — holds onto its quiet into early June. Water temps are still bracing in late May, but the sun works, the trails are clear of snow at lake level, and the walks along the shoreline under sugar pines are why we come here. Our Lake Tahoe spring guide has the full play-by-play. For this weekend, Tahoe Moon Properties handles dog-friendly rentals around Kings Beach and Tahoe City, and Mother Nature’s Inn in Tahoe City is the no-fuss pick if you’re booking late.

Mendocino coast: Headlands, cliffs, and fewer people

Highway 1 past Jenner clears out by the time you hit Elk, and Mendocino village itself stays walkable even on a holiday weekend. Late May is the sweet spot — wildflowers still clinging to the headlands, whales still offshore, fog banks that burn off by late morning. The Mendocino Hotel puts you right on Main Street, and Hill House Inn sits on the bluff with dog-friendly rooms facing the ocean. Read our Mendocino April guide for the trail and patio list — most of it still holds for Memorial Day.

Big Bear Lake: Mountain air, 90 minutes from LA

Memorial Day is when Big Bear officially switches from ski-town to lake-town. The marina opens up, the paddle rentals start, and the ring of dog-friendly trails through Jeffrey pine forest comes into its best stretch of the year. Bay Meadows Resort and Black Forest Lodge are both dog-welcoming cabin stays where nobody raises an eyebrow at muddy paws. Our Big Bear guide has the full rundown.

Avila Beach: Warm water and wide-open sand

Avila is the coastal escape for people who want to actually swim. Protected by the curve of San Luis Bay, the water warms earlier than anywhere else on the Central Coast, and the beach stays dog-friendly north of the pier. Avila La Fonda is steps from the sand and takes dogs without a fuss. Book now — Memorial Day is Avila’s first big test of the summer, and the small inns go fast.

Bishop and the Eastern Sierra: High desert, cool nights

Bishop is the town we point people to when they want mountains without snow stress. By late May, the Owens Valley is running 70s and 80s, creeks are swollen with snowmelt, and the White Mountains across the valley are showing their first green. Keough’s Hot Springs just south of town has cabins and a hot pool; the view toward the Sierra crest from the deck is the one we’d travel for. More ideas in our Bishop guide.

Bodega Bay: Salt air, 90 minutes from the city

If the forecast for inland California starts pushing 90°, Bodega is the Bay Area’s pressure valve. Cool, foggy, empty beaches, and a harbor that smells like the real thing. Bodega Coast Inn & Suites is the easy pick for a dog-friendly room with ocean views, and Bodega Harbor Inn is the more budget-minded sister option. Bring layers. Bring them again.

Plan ahead — these rooms don’t wait

Memorial Day weekend is California’s hardest booking weekend of the spring. The dog-friendly rooms at the places we’ve listed above typically sell through by mid-May. Call the inn directly if the online calendar shows full — pet rooms are sometimes held back. Pack layers wherever you’re headed; every destination on this list can swing 30 degrees between sunrise and noon. And don’t skip the basics: leash, waste bags, bed or blanket from home, and a car water bowl. A comfortable dog makes for a good trip.
