Bayview Campground

11001 Hwy. 89, South Lake Tahoe, California 95971

(530) 543-2600

Highway 89 north from South Lake Tahoe, about 8 miles up, puts you right across from Inspiration Point at Bayview Campground. It’s a walk-up setup near Emerald Bay at 7,100 feet elevation, and the place has real character—you’re camping at what amounts to the gateway to Desolation Wilderness. The campground opens and closes based on weather, so conditions vary throughout the season.

This is primarily a trailhead campground, which means you’re surrounded by serious hiking territory. Day hikers can grab a day-use permit from the self-serve station at the trailhead itself, while anyone planning overnight trips in Desolation Wilderness needs to snag a permit before you show up. If you’re bringing horses, there’s a corral and seasonal watering facilities right at the trailhead—though here’s something worth knowing: the water comes from the creek, and by late July through September it typically dries up completely. Plan to haul your own water during those months if you need it for animals.

Each campsite has a fire ring, and the expectation is you use what’s already there rather than building new ones. Respect those existing fire areas.

Dogs are allowed throughout the campground but need to stay leashed. Given that you’re at the edge of wilderness with miles of trail nearby, the leash requirement makes sense—it keeps your dog from wandering into territory where wildlife encounters become more likely and where they could get lost in the backcountry.

The setting itself is striking. You’re high enough that the air feels thinner and crisper than down at the lake level, and being positioned across from Inspiration Point means you’ve got real views of the Tahoe area. Bring layers—even in summer, nights at this elevation get cold. Cell service can be spotty depending on your provider, so don’t count on connectivity.
