Eagle Falls Trail

Eagle Falls Trail

138 Emerald Bay Rd., South Lake Tahoe, California 96150

(530) 543-2600

Eagle Falls Trail offers an easy, dog-friendly hike with stunning scenery that works well for beginning hikers who don’t mind a modest elevation gain in South Lake Tahoe. It’s just a 5-minute walk to the falls from the trailhead, and another quarter of a mile to Eagle Lake. There are some steep stairs and rocky portions on the trail, but they are short and manageable.

What makes this hike worth the drive is the payoff—incredible vistas of Eagle Lake and Eagle Falls open up quickly, with granite peaks and massive boulders framing the water. On the approach, you’ll see why this lake is so popular for swimming on warm days. The trail can get quite crowded, especially mid-morning through mid-afternoon, so arriving early gives you a better chance at parking and a quieter experience with your dog.

The trailhead setup is straightforward. You’ll need to fill out a free wilderness permit before heading out, which takes just a few minutes. The permit system helps manage the flow of hikers on this heavily trafficked route. The stairs can be slippery when wet, so watch your footing on the way down, and bring water for both you and your dog—while Eagle Lake is nearby, the trail itself doesn’t have water sources along the way.

The whole experience feels manageable even for dogs who aren’t experienced hikers. The rocky sections aren’t technical or dangerous, just uneven enough to keep things interesting. Most dogs handle it fine, though paws sensitive to sharp granite might appreciate booties. On a clear day, the granite and water views are genuinely stunning, and the short distance means you’re not committing to a full day of hiking. Arrive before 8 a.m. if possible to secure parking in the lot and avoid the afternoon rush.
