The Bayview Trail at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline gives you and your dog a solid 1.7-mile walk along San Pablo Bay with views across to Mt. Tamalpais and the Marin shoreline. The path is well-maintained with a rocked surface that’s easy on paws, and it meanders through a mix of meadows, eucalyptus groves, and bluff-top sections where you’ll get steady glimpses of the water. The park covers 2,315 acres total with twelve miles of trails, so if you want to extend beyond Bayview, there’s plenty to explore.
The setting feels genuinely remote despite being sandwiched between San Pablo, Pinole, and Richmond. In spring, wildflowers dot the meadows, and the eucalyptus woods offer shade during hotter months. You’ll likely spot birdlife—over 100 species use the area—so bring binoculars if you’re into that. The easy to moderate terrain works for dogs of most fitness levels, though the exposed sections can get windy.
Parking requires a small fee collected at the kiosk from April through October on weekends and holidays. There’s also a dog fee during those same periods. Outside that window, parking is free. The park opens at 5 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., so early morning or sunset walks are genuinely possible here.
Bring water for your dog since there aren’t reliable sources along the trail itself. The rocked paths handle moisture well, so even if conditions are damp, you won’t sink into mud. If you’re visiting on a weekend during peak season, arrive earlier rather than later—the parking area does fill up, especially on nice weather days. The combination of bay views, working landscape (you’ll see shipping traffic and sailboats), and actual solitude makes this worth the trip even if you’re coming from further into the East Bay.
