Bernardus Lodge

415 Carmel Valley Rd., Carmel Valley, California 93924

(831) 658-3400

Among the picturesque oaks and vineyards of Carmel Valley, Bernardus Lodge offers a genuine escape for dog owners seeking a comfortable getaway. This boutique resort blends elegant accommodations with a practical welcome for traveling with your dog. As you step into the lodge, you’ll notice the cozy fireplaces, oversized bathtubs, and warm ambiance throughout. Upon arrival, there’s a thoughtful welcome—vintage wine and cheese to enjoy as you settle in. The resort’s unique “wine grotto” mini bar lets you explore local selections, and for relaxation, the spa features a serene meditation garden, a warming room, and a soaking pool (dogs aren’t permitted in these areas).

Bernardus Lodge genuinely welcomes well-behaved dogs, allowing them to join you during your stay. While pets must be leashed at all times on the property, they’re welcome in the lobby and outdoors at Lucia Restaurant & Bar. Here, you can enjoy meals while your dog rests beside you, taking in the beautiful surroundings. The restaurant overlooks the valley, and the staff doesn’t make you feel rushed or out of place for dining with your dog. The lodge’s Concierge staff can point you toward other dog-friendly dining spots in Carmel Valley if you want to explore beyond the property.

The location itself works well for dogs. From the lodge, you’re close to several hiking trails through oak woodlands and vineyards—the valley’s terrain tends to be gentler than the coastal cliffs further west. Many of these trails allow dogs on leash, and the staff can direct you to the best routes depending on your dog’s energy level and your interests. Carmel Valley Road runs through the heart of the wine country, so you’ll find yourself surrounded by tasting rooms and wineries, though you’ll want to confirm pet policies at each one beforehand. The drive down from Highway 1 winds through redwood groves and open valleys, so even getting there feels like part of the experience. Bring water bottles for longer walks—the valley can get warm in summer, and shaded areas aren’t always available on the trail systems.
