Located in the beautiful Napa Valley wine country near Calistoga, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park offers camping, picnicking, swimming, and hiking trails that wind through stands of coastal redwoods as well as forests of douglas-fir, tanoak, and madrone. The park sits right along Highway 29, so it’s easy to find between wine country visits.

Daytime visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll in Ritchey Canyon on the Redwood Trail to view the delicate ferns and listen to the water splashing down the rocky creekbed. If you’re not up for the longer hikes, the Redwood Trail section near the creek is relatively short and peaceful. Bring your wine and cheese and picnic under the towering Douglas Firs—plenty of tables dot the picnic areas, and the shade here is genuine relief during hot valley afternoons.

Dogs are welcome in the campground and picnic areas as long as they stay leashed. This makes it a decent option if you’re camping in the park and want your dog nearby at your site. The trails and pool area, though, are off-limits to dogs, which limits what you can explore together. Dogs also can’t be left unattended anywhere in the park and must be secured inside a vehicle or tent once the sun goes down.

The main appeal for dog owners is really the campground itself—if you’re staying overnight, your dog has a place to be with you at your campsite, and you can take short walks around the immediate camp area before heading out on human-only hikes during the day. For a quick day visit with your dog, the picnic areas work fine for a break, but you won’t get much trail time together. The creek-side picnic spots are the most scenic places to spend time as a pair.
