Caples Lake in the scenic Carson Pass area off Highway 88 is a solid destination for a day hike with your dog. Sitting at 7,800 feet elevation, the lake itself is cold for swimming but makes a nice landmark for exploring the surrounding trails. A newer boat-launch facility on the east side serves boaters and fishermen, and the shoreline offers good spots to stop and rest.

The main trail starts at the western tip of Caples Lake and follows the shoreline for a bit before climbing steadily upward. It’s a 2.5-mile trek to Emigrant Lake with about 800 feet of elevation gain—nothing too brutal but definitely noticeable by the time you reach the top. At 8,600 feet, Emigrant Lake sits in a granite bowl with views that make the climb worthwhile. The water here is even colder than Caples, but it’s a good turnaround point for lunch if you packed something.

Dogs can be off-leash on the surrounding Eldorado National Forest trails as long as they stay under voice control and don’t spook wildlife or other hikers. Most dogs handle the elevation fine, though it’s worth bringing extra water since the trail is fairly exposed in spots. The whole out-and-back hike takes three to four hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at the lake.

If you want to make it an overnight trip, there’s a developed Forest Service campground at Caples Lake with the usual amenities. Camping near Emigrant Lake itself isn’t allowed—they enforce a 300-foot buffer around the shoreline to keep the alpine zone from getting trampled. The area can get busy on weekends, especially during the short hiking season from mid-summer through September when snow finally clears the high passes. Winter access is questionable after the first big storms, so check conditions before heading out if you’re visiting in late fall.
