Kirkwood Campground

Carson Pass Highway, Kirkwood, California 96120

Kirkwood Lake Campground in Alpine County sits right off Highway 88, about 57 miles east of Jackson in the Sierra Nevada high country. The campground has 12 tent-only sites arranged on a first-come, first-served basis, which means you can’t reserve ahead but you also don’t have to plan months in advance. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, bear-proof food storage box, vault toilets, and piped water—the essentials are there.

The setting is genuinely quiet. You’re in Gold Country but away from the busier tourist areas, and the elevation keeps things cool even in summer. The lake itself is small and alpine, surrounded by the kind of forest that makes you remember why you wanted to camp in the first place. Most people camping here are either fishing or just looking for a low-key mountain break.

Dogs are allowed throughout the campground and on nearby trails, but they need to stay on leash at all times. That’s standard for most public campgrounds in the Sierra, and it makes sense given the wildlife in the area. You’ll have plenty of walking options right from your site, and the surrounding area has good hiking if you’re willing to drive a few minutes to trailheads.

The campground itself is pretty bare-bones in the best way. No hookups, no amenities beyond what’s listed, no store. Bring what you need from Jackson or the nearest towns. In winter, Highway 88 can close, so check conditions before heading up if it’s late fall or early spring. The vault toilets are maintained but this isn’t a place for anyone wanting showers or other comforts. If you’re after genuine quiet camping in the high Sierra with your dog, this delivers exactly that without pretense.
