Carter House Inns

301 L Street, Eureka, California 95501

(707) 444-8062

Carter House Inns sits in a cluster of four Victorian homes overlooking Humboldt Bay in Old Town Eureka, the kind of place where you step out the door and can see the water. The rooms are genuinely nice—the kind with actual character from the historic buildings, but with modern comfort that doesn’t force you to choose between old-fashioned and livable.

Your dog gets a bed and bowls in the room, which is helpful if you didn’t want to pack those. The staff actually knows which local spots work for dogs and will point you toward places rather than just saying “we’re pet-friendly” and leaving you to figure it out. We found that refreshing after staying places that treated the dog policy like a legal afterthought.

What sets this place apart is Restaurant 301, which is right there at the inn and genuinely good—they use local ingredients and aren’t just banking on being the hotel restaurant. You can eat well without having to load the dog back in the car and drive somewhere else. If you have dietary restrictions, they work with you on that.

The location matters if you have a dog. Sequoia Park is close by, and so are the beaches along the bay—the water views from walks around Old Town are legitimately beautiful, and there’s enough pavement and open space that you’re not constantly dodging crowds. In the mornings before things get busy, you can take a real walk instead of just a quick bathroom break.

The rooms themselves vary depending which Victorian you’re in, so if you have preferences about layout or views, it’s worth asking about that when you book. Winter weather in Humboldt County means mornings can be damp and cool, so the heated rooms are actually nice rather than just a selling point. If you’re planning to spend real time in Eureka exploring the historic district and surrounding parks, staying here keeps everything accessible without feeling like a tourist trap.
