In Mariposa County, just a stone’s throw from Yosemite National Park, lies Chowchilla Mountain Road Trail. This quiet route offers a real escape for hikers who want to bring their dogs along. Starting from Highway 49, the trail winds upward over the summit, delivering views that open up as you gain elevation before dropping down to Highway 41/Wawona Road near the golf course.
The trail itself follows an old mountain road, so the path is well-defined and easier to navigate than many backcountry hikes. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout, which makes this a solid choice if you want a longer outing without worrying about off-leash restrictions. The elevation gain is moderate—challenging enough to feel like real exercise but not so steep that it becomes grinding. The forested sections provide shade, and you’ll notice the landscape shifts as you climb, moving from denser trees to more open areas near the top.
What works particularly well here is the flexibility. You can turn this into a full ridge-walk if you have the time and energy, or cut it short and still feel like you’ve done something worthwhile. The mountain air does get noticeably cooler as you climb, so even warm days feel manageable up there. Bring water—there aren’t reliable sources along the route itself.
Since it’s a road-turned-trail rather than a narrow footpath, it never feels cramped or claustrophobic, even when you encounter other hikers. The views back toward the surrounding ridges and valleys are worth the effort, and the quieter nature of this spot compared to the main Yosemite attractions means you won’t deal with crowds. Given its proximity to Highway 41, you’re also only a short drive from Wawona if you want to grab food or supplies before or after your hike.
