Wawona Campground sits along the mariposa/”>Merced River in Mariposa County, about an hour’s drive from Yosemite’s main valley entrance. The campground has around 100 campsites scattered through a mixed forest, each with a fire ring and picnic table. Sites range from tent camping areas to RV spots, and most have decent spacing between them so you’re not right on top of your neighbors.
The river itself is the main draw here. It’s shallow in many spots and calm enough for dogs to wade in during warmer months, though water levels vary by season. We found the sites closer to the river more appealing, though they book up faster. The quieter back loops are better if you’re looking for a more isolated camping experience. Restrooms have running water and flush toilets, and there are spigots throughout the campground for filling water containers.
The location works well for dogs because you’re on the edge of things rather than deep in the national park itself. You can explore meadows and forest on the campground grounds without the strict leash laws that apply inside Yosemite proper. There’s a small ranger station on-site where you can get information about local trails and conditions.
One thing to know: this area gets genuinely cold at night, even in summer. Bring layers and a warm sleeping bag if you’re tent camping. Bugs can be thick during damp periods, so pack insect repellent. The nearest significant supplies are in Mariposa, about 20 minutes away, so stock up before you arrive if you need anything specific.
Dogs stay on-leash in the camping areas themselves and at shared facilities, which is standard for established campgrounds. Call ahead before your trip to confirm current pet policies and any associated fees, since these can change seasonally.
