Circle X Ranch sits in a canyon setting above Malibu, with Boney Mountain rising dramatically above the property. This former Boy Scout camp gives you plenty of reasons to spend a few days exploring with your dog. The main draw is Sandstone Peak, the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains, which you can reach on a clear day and spot several of the Channel Islands from the summit. The hike isn’t trivial, but the views make it worthwhile.
Beyond the peak, there are quieter options scattered across the property. The Grotto is a popular spot for a short walk, and if you want something more low-key, creekside areas work well for a picnic. The Group Camp area is where you’ll really feel the landscape—staying overnight here means hearing coyotes calling through the canyon at night, which some people love and others find unsettling. It’s an authentic experience of what the Santa Monica Mountains actually sound like.
Your dog needs to stay on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times while you’re on the property. This is straightforward to manage on most trails and around camp. Clean up after your dog, same as anywhere else. One important thing to know: if you’re planning to explore the backcountry areas that connect to Point Mugu State Park, dogs aren’t allowed back there. So plan your routes accordingly—most of the main attractions and trails at Circle X itself are open to leashed dogs.
The property feels more rustic than manicured, which is honestly part of the appeal. You’re getting a real canyon experience, not a polished recreation area. If you want mountain hikes, canyon exploration, and the sounds of actual wildlife rather than a curated nature experience, this works well. Just bring water for both of you and check trail conditions before you go.
