Point Mugu State Park, located in the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu, spreads across five miles of ocean shoreline with rocky bluffs, sandy beaches, and rugged hills that make for genuinely varied hiking. The landscape shifts constantly as you move through the park—one moment you’re walking along the coast, the next you’re inland through wide grassy valleys shaded by sycamores, oaks, and native walnuts. Two major river canyons cut through the terrain, adding another dimension to the terrain you’ll encounter.
Dogs on leash can explore over 70 designated trails here, which means you’re not stuck with the same route twice. The options range from straightforward coastal walks to more demanding hillside treks, so you can match the hike to what you and your dog are up for that day. Some trails stick close to the water’s edge, while others climb up into the ridges for views back toward the coast. The mix of sandy and dirt paths is generally easier on dog paws than pavement, though the terrain can get rocky in spots.
The park gets busy on weekends, especially in summer, but there are enough trails that you can usually find some quieter options if you head inland rather than staying along the beach. Early mornings tend to be less crowded. Bring plenty of water—there aren’t many shaded rest spots, and the exposed hillsides can get hot. The valley sections offer more shade if your dog needs a break from the sun.
Winter and early spring are probably the best times to visit. The weather’s cooler, the wildflowers are out, and the park doesn’t feel as packed. Just be prepared for some muddy patches after rain on the lower-elevation trails. Check the park’s website before heading out, since occasional closures happen for maintenance or fire management.
