Civita Dog Park

Civita Dog Park

San Diego, California 92108

Civita Dog Park sits in a residential neighborhood south of downtown with views toward the bay—a working-class corner of the city where the park feels like an actual gathering spot rather than a tourist attraction. The main off-leash area sprawls across several fenced acres with a mix of grass and packed dirt, sloping slightly downhill with enough open space that dogs can really run. A separate enclosure for small dogs sits near the entrance, smaller in footprint but still properly fenced, so toy breeds and nervous dogs get their own room.

Water bowls are scattered throughout both areas, and there’s a hose station if you need to refill. Shade comes from mature trees planted around the perimeter and a few in the middle of the larger field—enough to find relief on hot days, though the park sits relatively exposed. Dogs are allowed off-leash in both fenced areas during posted hours; no one under voice control, and standard rules apply (current vaccines, adult supervision). The park runs from dawn to dusk most days, and mid-morning and late afternoon tend to draw the regular crew.

The terrain is manageable for most fitness levels—mostly flat with that gentle slope I mentioned. If your dog hates the feeling of loose dirt between their pads, bring booties; the ground gets dusty in summer. The neighborhoods immediately around Civita are quiet residential blocks; head north and you’re moving toward commercial strips along Harbor Drive. If you’re coming from other parts of San Diego, the location is south of downtown near the waterfront, a fifteen-minute drive from most central neighborhoods. Parking is street-side along the park perimeter, free but limited on weekend mornings when the regulars show up.
