Coldwater Campground

Lake Mary Loop Rd., Mammoth Lakes, California 93546

(760) 924-5500

Coldwater Campground sits at elevation in the eastern Sierra Nevada, just outside Mammoth Lakes, within the national forest where the air gets noticeably thinner and cooler even in summer. You’ll find it’s a solid choice if you’re bringing your dog and want a real camping experience rather than just a parking lot with hookups.

The campground itself has spacious sites spread across the area, which means your dog gets actual room to move around between the tent or RV and the surrounding forest. The trails from here are legitimate—you can do everything from short walks that loop back to camp in an hour to longer hikes into the high country if you’re up for it. Fishing is viable in the nearby water, and the road cycling in the region is exceptional if that’s your thing. Picnicking works well too, since there are clearings where you can set up without feeling cramped.

What actually matters when camping with a dog at elevation: your dog will likely sleep better and longer due to the thinner air and cooler temperatures. The downside is that some dogs take a day or two to adjust to the altitude, so plan accordingly if your dog isn’t used to being above 8,000 feet. The trails here handle dogs well—rocky in places but not brutally so—and water access isn’t an issue.

The campground maintains the sites decently and doesn’t feel neglected the way some forest service camps do. Summer is the obvious season, though the area can open for shorter windows in spring and fall depending on snow. Mammoth Lakes itself is close enough for supply runs if you forget anything, so you’re not completely remote, but far enough away that the campground still feels genuinely separated from town chaos.
