Coyote Point Recreation Area in San Mateo spreads across 149 acres right along the San Francisco Bay, with enough variety that you could easily spend a full day here with your dog. Leashed dogs are welcome on many of the grounds and designated trails, so you’ll have plenty of room to explore together.
The Promenade Trail is the standout walk—it’s paved and winds along the waterfront with panoramic views of the bay and the San Francisco skyline. As you walk, you might spot pelicans, shorebirds, and occasionally a harbor seal in the water. The paved pathways and nature trails also loop through eucalyptus groves and open meadows, so your dog will have plenty of interesting sights and smells beyond just the water views.
Beyond dog walking, the park has a lot going on. There’s a Magic Mountain Playground with a castle-and-dragon theme if you’re bringing kids, plus picnic areas you can reserve for group gatherings or family reunions. You can also swim, windsurf, bike, jog, fish, boat, or sail here depending on what you’re into. CuriOdyssey is on the grounds too, though dogs aren’t permitted inside—it’s an interactive wildlife experience for kids.
After your walk, find a shady picnic spot near the water and settle in with your leashed dog. The bay breezes and views make it a nice spot to relax and eat. The park charges a vehicle entry fee at the gate. If you want to reserve a picnic area, you can contact the San Mateo County Parks Department. Since dog policies can vary by specific area within the park, it’s worth checking trail signage as you go, and calling ahead if you have questions about where dogs are allowed on particular trails.
