Dinkey Creek Campground sits near Shaver Lake in Fresno County’s high country, surrounded by Ponderosa pines and cedars with a creek running right through the property. The setting is genuinely quiet—the kind of place where you actually hear the water moving and the wind in the trees rather than neighboring RVs. The campground has spacious sites spread throughout, so you’re not packed in tight with other campers.
Dogs do well here because there’s plenty of room to move around and explore the surrounding wilderness. The creek itself is a draw for a lot of people, though the water can be cold and the current varies depending on the season. We spent time just walking the perimeter of the grounds, and our dog appreciated the open spaces and natural terrain. Hiking trails branch out from the area if you want to venture farther, and the whole region is good for fishing if that’s your thing.
The campground is at elevation, so it’s cooler than the valley floor—which is either a relief or something to plan for depending on when you go. Summer is the obvious choice for most people. Spring and fall are quieter but the weather can be unpredictable. Winter essentially closes things down.
Sites have the standard setup you’d expect at a Forest Service campground: picnic table, fire ring, and parking. There are restroom facilities on-site. Cell service is spotty, which honestly feels like part of the point. The location puts you close enough to Shaver Lake if you want to drive over for a change of scenery, but far enough away that it feels removed.
The drive from the valley takes a couple hours, so plan accordingly. The campground fills up during peak summer weekends, so if you’re going then, book ahead rather than showing up hoping for a spot.
