El Toyon Dog Park

2005 E 4th St, National City, California

El Toyon Dog Park sits on a sprawling patch of land near the southern edge of San Diego County, with low coastal scrub and dirt that turns to dust in summer. The park’s defining feature is its sheer openness—there’s no claustrophobic loop here, just room to move in multiple directions across mostly flat ground. On weekday mornings, you’ll have stretches of the park nearly to yourself, though weekends draw regulars from the surrounding neighborhoods.

Dogs are off-leash in the designated dog park area, which occupies a good portion of the grounds. The rest of the park requires dogs on-leash. Water stations exist but are sporadic, so bring your own collapsible bowl and refill before you arrive—the faucets aren’t always reliable in hotter months. Shade is sparse; a few scattered trees offer minimal relief, and most of the park is fully exposed. The terrain is hard-packed dirt and packed earth, relatively even, making it easy on paws but hot to the touch midday. Afternoon sun here gets serious in summer and early fall.

The park sits east of downtown National City, roughly a mile from Highway 188. The area is quieter and less developed than nearby communities, which means fewer crowds but also fewer amenities immediately surrounding the space. Parking is straightforward and free. Mornings are genuinely pleasant here through much of the year—temperatures stay manageable until late morning, and the open layout means your dog can really run. Late afternoon visits from June through September can be brutal; plan for early morning or early evening if you’re going in warmer months. The park has no formal trails, but dogs can move freely across the open grounds, and the lack of dense vegetation means good sightlines if you have a dog prone to bolting.
