Elkhorn Regional Park

18989 Old River Rd., West Sacramento, California 95691

(530) 406-4880

Elkhorn Regional Park sits right on the berm between the levee and the Sacramento River, about 1.75 miles south of where I-5 crosses the river on Old River Road in West Sacramento. The 55-acre park is essentially a slice of riparian habitat wedged between the water and the flood control levee, so you get real vegetation and actual wildlife rather than manicured grounds.

The landscape here works well for dogs since there’s plenty of shade from mature trees and good spots to explore along the maintained paths. You’ll see herons, egrets, and other river birds throughout the day, which keeps dogs alert and interested. The park has a boat ramp if you’re bringing your own watercraft, a picnic area with tables, a parking lot, and sanitary facilities. Most people come for fishing or bird watching, so it stays relatively quiet even on weekends.

This is day-use only—no overnight camping allowed—so plan for a few hours rather than an overnighter. The park opens at 7 a.m. and closes at dusk, though it does close sometimes when river conditions get dicey. A use fee is required when you arrive. There’s a Park Host living on-site who can answer questions about current conditions or what wildlife has been spotted recently.

Your dog needs to stay on leash the entire time you’re there, and you’ll want to bring bags since cleanup is expected. The proximity to the Sacramento River means the ground can be muddy depending on the season and recent water levels, so don’t be surprised if your dog comes out looking like they’ve been wallowing. The river itself moves fast here, so keep dogs away from the water’s edge even if they’re strong swimmers.
