Fiesta Island is essentially a 125-acre peninsula in Mission Bay where your dog can run leash-free across open grass, packed dirt, and sandy stretches with water on three sides. The whole island functions as an off-leash dog park—no cordoned areas, no restrictions on where dogs can roam (except the designated ecological preserve on the eastern tip, which is fenced off). It’s the kind of place where you’ll see dogs swimming alongside paddleboarders, chasing tennis balls across flat meadows, and splashing through shallow bay waters without anyone on a lead.
Dogs are free to roam the full island during daylight hours year-round. There are no size restrictions, age requirements, or fees. Water access is constant—the shallow bay waters warm up considerably in summer, making swimming accessible to dogs of all abilities. You’ll find scattered picnic tables, a small parking area near the entrance, and that’s largely it for amenities. The terrain is entirely flat with minimal elevation gain; trails are informal dirt and grass paths created by foot and paw traffic over time.
Expect the island to be most crowded on weekend mornings and early afternoons, especially April through September when the weather draws families and tourists. Late afternoon on weekdays is noticeably quieter. Bring water and shade is minimal—mostly just the small brush and occasional trees near the parking area, so timing your visit for cooler hours matters if your dog is heat-sensitive. The island sits in Mission Bay near Crown Point and Vacation Isle; the walk from parking to the widest open areas takes about five to ten minutes. High tide pushes water closer to the walking paths and can reduce available sandy beach, while low tide opens up more exposed sand for running. No restrooms on the island, so plan accordingly before you arrive.
