Fiesta Island

San Diego, San Diego, California

Dog-friendly Fiesta Island, situated within Mission Bay, is a sprawling park that attracts numerous charity walks, runs, bicycle races, and special events. It’s particularly known as the host of the annual Over-the-Line tournament. The island welcomes both dogs and horses, and the setup makes it easy to manage your dog whether you want them on or off leash.

Dogs can roam freely in most areas, though you’ll need to keep them leashed in the Youth Campground and away from the Least Tern nesting sites during nesting season. The island’s geography gives you variety — there are calmer bay waters perfect for dogs that enjoy swimming without dealing with ocean waves, plus sand dunes where dogs can really stretch their legs and run. The contrast between water access and open running space makes it versatile depending on what your dog is in the mood for on any given day.

The park is located in Mission Bay Park off East Mission Bay Drive, accessible from I-5 by taking the Sea World Drive exit and heading southwest, then turning right onto East Mission Bay Drive before heading left to the island itself. Parking is scattered throughout the island, so you won’t have trouble finding a spot even when events are happening.

The gates open at 4 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. daily, so early morning visits work if you want to avoid crowds or prefer cooler temperatures. Just remember to bring bags for cleanup — it’s a shared space used by lots of people and dogs, and keeping it clean is what allows everyone to enjoy it. The mix of events happening here means you might catch something interesting during your visit, from organized races to casual weekend athletes training.
