Foothill Regional Park in Windsor spreads across 211 acres with enough variety that you won’t feel like you’re just doing laps around the same trail. The park has three lakes on the property—bass and bluegill fishing is allowed, but swimming, boating, and wading aren’t, so the water stays calm and clean. The trails wind through different landscapes, so you get some visual interest as you walk rather than the same scenery the whole time.
Dogs need to stay leashed (six feet maximum), which makes sense given the size of the park and other visitors who might be around. The real thing to plan for here is water. Bring plenty for both of you, especially if you’re going in the warmer months. It’s one of those parks where you realize halfway through a two-mile loop that you should have packed more. The grass areas are genuinely nice for stopping and eating lunch if you bring something dog-friendly—you’re not eating at picnic tables wedged next to a parking lot.
The park operates sunrise to sunset, which gives you a decent window depending on the season. One thing worth knowing: they do close during high wind advisories or storm conditions, so if the weather’s looking iffy, call ahead or check for closure notices before you make the drive. There’s a day-use parking fee, which is standard for regional parks in Sonoma County.
The trails themselves aren’t particularly challenging, which is good if you have an older dog or just want a relaxed outing rather than a strenuous hike. Pick up after your dog—the park staff has to deal with enough without adding that to their list. If you have specific questions about current pet policies or seasonal trail conditions, it’s worth a quick call to confirm before heading out, especially if you’re planning around a particular time of year.
