Mariposa County, California, is a fantastic destination for dog lovers, especially when visiting Yosemite. Here are some dog-friendly activities and places to explore that promise a mix of adventure, history, and quirky fun.

Hike the trails

Start your adventure with some of the dog-friendly trails in Yosemite. The Wawona Meadow Loop is a 3.5-mile trail in the Wawona area that’s perfect for a leisurely hike with your furry friend. This relatively flat trail offers beautiful meadow views and is one of the few places in the park where dogs are allowed. Another great option is the South Fork Trail near Wawona, which offers a peaceful hike along the South Fork of the Merced River, providing a serene environment for both you and your dog.

Enjoy Yosemite area pet-friendly dining

When hunger strikes, head to one of Mariposa’s pet-friendly dining spots. 1850 Restaurant and Brewery offers a dog-friendly patio where you can enjoy a meal or a craft beer. The Alley in Mariposa is a casual restaurant with a dog-friendly patio, making it a great place to enjoy local dishes after a day of exploring. June Bug Cafe in Midpines has dog-friendly outdoor picnic tables. It serves American comfort food, perfect after a hike in Yosemite.

Stay at dog-friendly accommodations

Finding a comfortable place to stay with your dog is easy in Mariposa County. Tenaya at Yosemite, located near the park’s south entrance, offers dog-friendly rooms and even has a special “Deluxe Pampered Pet Package” that includes amenities for your dog. Mariposa Lodge is another pet-friendly hotel and a convenient base for exploring both Mariposa County and Yosemite.

Take a scenic Yosemite drive

While you may not be able to hike all the trails with your dog in Yosemite, you can still enjoy the park’s stunning scenery from your car. The Yosemite Valley Loop Drive allows you to see some of the most iconic views of the park. Dogs are allowed in developed areas like parking lots and picnic areas, so you can stop for breaks and short walks to enjoy the scenery together.

Dog-friendly ghost town tour

Visit the historic mining ghost town of Coulterville. Walk through this quaint town with your dog and explore the remnants of the Gold Rush era. Many outdoor areas and old buildings can be viewed from the outside, making it a unique and slightly eerie experience.

Visit the Butterfly Creek Winery

Located in Mariposa, this small family-owned winery welcomes dogs. Enjoy a wine tasting while your dog relaxes by your side. The winery also has beautiful grounds for a leisurely walk, making it a perfect spot to unwind.

More Yosemite-area trails

Another excellent trail is the Hite Cove Trail, a 9-mile round trip route known for its stunning wildflower displays in spring. This moderately difficult trail runs alongside the South Fork of the Merced River, providing beautiful scenery and ample river access. While dogs must be kept on a leash, the picturesque views and refreshing river spots make it a delightful hike for you and your dog.

When hiking these trails, remember to keep your dog on a leash, bring plenty of water, hike during cooler parts of the day, check the ground temperature to protect your dog’s paws, and always pack out all waste. These precautions will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and your pet.

Mariposa Butterfly Festival

If you’re visiting in May, don’t miss the Mariposa Butterfly Festival. The event includes parades, music, and activities, and dogs are often welcome in outdoor areas. It’s a colorful and vibrant experience for you and your dog, celebrating the beauty of butterflies and the community spirit.

The quirkiest dog-friendly activity: Panning for gold

One of the quirkiest dog-friendly activities in Mariposa County is visiting the California State Mining and Mineral Museum’s outdoor areas. Here, you can try your hand at panning for gold, a fun and historical activity that’s dog-friendly. While dogs aren’t allowed inside the museum, the outdoor gold panning area welcomes them. It’s a hands-on experience that brings history to life and provides a unique way to spend the day. The museum’s gift shop offers unique mineral specimens and gold panning supplies, making it a perfect place to pick up a memorable keepsake of your quirky adventure.
