Located in Mill Valley, Marin County, the Gravity Car Road Trail is a solid choice if you want an easy walk that won’t wear out your dog or eat up your whole afternoon. The trailhead is off the Panoramic Highway near the Throckmorton Fire Station, and from there you get a flat, straightforward 2-mile path that meanders through redwood and oak woodland. It’s the kind of hike where you can actually have a conversation the whole way without gasping for breath.
The trail itself is wide and well-maintained, which makes it easy to manage your dog without constantly worrying about them wandering off trail or getting into trouble. You’ll pass through shaded sections where it stays cool even on warmer days, and there are enough open spots to get decent views of the surrounding landscape. The real appeal here is that it’s genuinely mellow — no steep climbs, no exposed rocky sections, just a nice walk through the woods.
What makes this worth the drive from other parts of the Bay Area is that Gravity Car Road connects to a larger network of trails in the area if you want to extend your outing. Some people use it as a warm-up before tackling something more ambitious nearby, or they’ll loop it with another trail if their dog is feeling ambitious. The underfoot conditions are generally good, though it can get muddy in winter, so plan accordingly.
The parking situation is decent, and the area doesn’t usually feel crowded even on weekends, which is a nice bonus when you’re trying to give your dog a relaxed outing. Bring water for both of you since there aren’t reliable water sources along the trail itself.
