Grays Peak Trailhead

Grays Peak Trail, Fawnskin, California 92333

(909) 382-2790

Grays Peak Trail (1W06) is a rewarding 7-mile round-trip hike on the north shore of Big Bear Lake near Fawnskin, with roughly 1,000 feet of elevation gain. The trail climbs steadily through pine forest to a summit with sweeping views of Big Bear Lake, the San Bernardino Mountains, and the high desert beyond. It’s rated moderate to difficult, so hikers with some trail experience and good stamina will enjoy it most. Plan on 3 to 4 hours for the full out-and-back.

The path is mostly shaded through the lower sections, which is nice if you’re hiking in warmer months, but the upper portions open up and become more exposed. That means bringing plenty of water for both you and your dog is essential—those rocky upper sections and the exposed ridgeline dry you out fast. The trail surface is dirt with some rocky sections near the top that can be a bit rough on paws, so watch your dog’s footing if they’re not used to scrambling.

Dogs are allowed on the trail and must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet per San Bernardino National Forest regulations. The trailhead is on the west side of Highway 38, about 0.6 miles west of Fawnskin, directly across from the Grout Bay Picnic Area. You’ll need a National Forest Adventure Pass for parking.

One important note: the trail is closed from November 1 through April 1 to protect bald eagle wintering habitat. The best time to hike is May through October. If you’re planning a trip during those open months and have a dog with decent trail legs, this one delivers real views without requiring a major expedition. Just bring extra water—you’ll both appreciate it.
