Groveland Dog Park sits on the edge of the Sierra Nevada foothills, where the landscape shifts from valley heat into cooler pine country. The park sprawls across several fenced acres with real grass underfoot—a relief in a region where summer heat can turn most ground to dust. The layout includes a separate enclosure for small dogs, which means your ten-pounder won’t spend the afternoon dodging seventy-pound retrievers if that’s not your preference. Water stations are scattered across the grounds so you won’t need to carry a full reservoir, though shade varies depending on the season and tree growth in recent years.

Dogs roam off-leash throughout both sections once you pass through the double gates. The park is open during daylight hours year-round. No fees are required to use the facility. Peak times cluster around late afternoon and weekends when locals bring their dogs out after work or school; early mornings or midweek visits tend to be quieter.

The park sits at elevation—around 3,500 feet—which means cooler temperatures than the valley floor but also that summer afternoons can still climb into the high 80s. Winter occasionally brings snow at this elevation between December and February, which significantly changes conditions for visiting. The drive to Groveland from the Bay Area takes roughly two hours via Highway 120, making it a realistic day trip for anyone heading toward Yosemite’s north entrance or the Stanislaus National Forest. After the park, dogs can walk on many of the quieter streets in downtown Groveland, which sits just a few miles south, or head straight into the backcountry trails that crisscross the foothills nearby.
