Hap Magee Small Dog Park

Hap Magee Small Dog Park

La Gonda Way, Alamo, California 94507

Hap Magee’s small dog area is genuinely small—a separate, fenced section where dogs under 25 pounds can move without getting bowled over by larger dogs. The setup works because it’s actually enforced; the gate between the two sections stays closed, and most owners respect the division. The ground is grass and decomposed granite, which drains reasonably well and doesn’t turn into a mud pit after rain, though it gets packed down in high-traffic spots near the water bowls.

Dogs can access the park from sunrise to sunset year-round. There’s no fee and no registration required. The small dog section has shade from oak trees scattered across the area, though on hot afternoons you’ll want to arrive early or later in the day—the west side gets full sun exposure by mid-day. Water bowls sit inside both the small and large dog areas, but bring a collapsible bowl if your dog prefers their own. The grass section connects to a decomposed granite side that’s easier on paws if the ground is wet or muddy.

The park sits within Hap Magee Ranch Park on La Gonda Way, a larger recreation area with open fields and picnic tables if you want to linger. Mornings before 9 a.m. tend to be quieter, while late afternoons pull more of a crowd, especially on weekends. The small dog area is genuinely compact—maybe half an acre—so it fills up fast when multiple dogs arrive at once. If you’re coming with a reactive dog or one that needs space to decompress, aim for off-peak hours. Parking is free and plentiful in the ranch lot; the dog park entrance is a short walk from the main parking area toward the back of the property.
