Highgate Dog Park

Highgate Park Boulevard, Bakersfield, California 93311

Highgate Dog Park occupies a broad, open expanse of Highgate Park Boulevard with real grass underfoot—a genuine relief in Bakersfield’s heat. The park sprawls across multiple fenced acres, divided so that smaller dogs have their own dedicated space away from the larger, more exuberant crowd. Shade structures dot the grounds, essential during the brutal summer months when the thermometer regularly hits the low hundreds. Water stations are positioned throughout the park, though bringing your own collapsible bowl means your dog can drink whenever needed rather than waiting for a refill cycle.

Dogs of all sizes are welcome during daylight hours. The separate small-dog enclosure keeps nervous or fragile dogs from getting knocked around by the 60-plus-pound set. Entry is free. The fencing is secure and well-maintained, and the layout gives you clear sightlines no matter where you’re standing. Poop bags are available at entrances, and park staff makes regular rounds to maintain the space. The dry climate means cleanup happens faster than in coastal dog parks.

Most visitors cluster in the morning and late afternoon when temperatures drop; midday tends to be quieter, which some owners prefer for one-on-one play or training time. The grass does wear thin in high-traffic zones, especially around water sources and play areas, so expect some bare patches and harder-packed earth as the season progresses. Bakersfield’s summer heat makes timing matter—bring water and a hat, and consider visiting in the 6 to 8 a.m. window or after 5 p.m. from June through September. The park borders residential neighborhoods, making it easy to access from central Bakersfield.
