Looking for a fun spot to explore with your friends, family, and dogs? Check out the Bureau of Land Management’s Hobo Camp Day Use Area, located just 0.6 miles west of Susanville on the Bizz Johnson Trail, making it easily accessible by car. This dog-friendly place is great for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
If you’re in the mood for a picnic, there are 12 sites ready with tables, fire rings, and barbeques. There’s also a double vault toilet for convenience. The main draw here is access to some solid trail options. The trailhead is the starting point for the 25-mile Bizz Johnson Trail, which follows an old railroad grade and offers mostly level terrain—great if you want a mellow walk with your dog rather than a strenuous climb. For something shorter, the 7-mile South Side Trail leads to Devil’s Corral and loops back toward the camp, giving you flexibility depending on how much time and energy you have.
The area also works well if you want to combine hiking with other activities. Swimming and fishing are both options here, so you could spend part of your day on the water if conditions allow. The Bizz Johnson Trail itself becomes a sort of hub—you can access it from Hobo Camp and venture out to different distances, then return to the picnic area for lunch or a break.
Keep in mind that Hobo Camp operates seasonally, from May through mid-November. Access to the site is gated and closes at nightfall, reopening at 8 am, so plan your visit accordingly. The spring and early fall months tend to be most pleasant for hiking in this area, though the trail stays relatively mild throughout the season. Bring water for both you and your dog, especially on the longer trail options.
