Hollandia Dog Park sits on a hill overlooking Mission Hills in San Marcos, with enough space that you can actually throw a ball without worrying it’ll end up in someone else’s conversation. The main area is a mix of grass and decomposed granite—better drainage than pure grass, and your dog won’t track as much mud home after a rain. Shade comes from a handful of mature trees scattered across the property, though on summer afternoons the open sections get plenty of direct sun, so bring water and plan accordingly.
The park divides into two separate enclosures: a larger area for dogs of all sizes and a dedicated small-dog section that keeps the under-20-pound crowd from getting bowled over. Both are fully fenced, and the gates are the self-closing kind that actually work. There’s a water station in the main area, which matters on hot days since the park sits at elevation and can feel warmer than downtown San Marcos. The facility is open dawn to dusk, and it tends to be quieter on weekday mornings and busier after work and on weekend afternoons.
The park sits on Mission Hills Court off Mission Road, just north of Highway 78. It’s part of the city’s recreational complex, so there’s dedicated parking right there and clean restrooms nearby if you need them. The surface drains well, but after heavy rain the grass can stay soft for a couple days—not muddy, just spongy. Most people stay for 30 to 45 minutes, which is about right given the size and the social energy levels you’ll find here. Bring your own waste bags since supplies aren’t always stocked, and note that the small-dog section has limited shade, so time visits accordingly if your smaller dog is heat-sensitive.
