Horsetail Falls sits along Highway 50 at Twin Bridges in the Tahoe area, and the three-mile hike to the 800-foot cascade is legitimately challenging—expect 1,200 feet of elevation gain on the way up. It’s a real workout, but the waterfall itself is worth every step, especially in late spring and early summer when snowmelt makes it thunderous and impressive.
The trail is well-marked and passes through dense forest with some striking rock formations that make for decent photos if you stop to catch your breath. Your dog will get solid exercise here, though the path can get slippery once you’re closer to the falls, particularly when water’s rushing hard. The rocks and edges near the cascade aren’t forgiving, so keep your dog leashed throughout and stay aware of where they’re stepping. Wildlife in the area can be unpredictable, so having your dog under control matters more here than on some easier trails.
Bring significantly more water than you think you’ll need—both for yourself and your dog. The elevation and exposure means the sun can be relentless on the way back down, and there’s no reliable water source along the trail itself. In the hottest months, consider going early or waiting until later in the day to avoid the worst heat.
The scenery is genuinely nice, with lush forest surrounding you for most of the hike. It’s not a casual stroll, though. This is the kind of outing where your dog actually sleeps hard afterward, and you’ll feel like you accomplished something real. If you want to bring a snack and sit near the top, the area around the falls gives you a place to decompress, though it’s fairly exposed once you’re there. Just make sure your dog has recovered enough before heading back down—pushing a tired dog on a steep descent with slippery sections isn’t fun for anyone.
