Hurkey Creek Park sits just 4 miles southeast of Mountain Center in the San Jacinto Mountains of Riverside County, accessible off Highway 74. The park centers around a seasonal creek lined with towering pines and backed by mountain views that shift throughout the day as the light changes. During the wet season, there’s actual water to explore—you can wade in the creek or fish if conditions allow, though flow varies depending on winter runoff.
The layout gives dogs room to roam in designated areas where they can investigate the forest floor and splash around without feeling confined. Picnic tables are scattered through the grounds, so you can settle in for a few hours and let your dog rest between activities. The trails through the surrounding mountains range from easy walks to more challenging hikes, and they genuinely wind through varied terrain rather than just looping around the same clearing. You’ll notice the elevation as you climb—the air gets noticeably cooler and thinner than it is down in the valleys.
Timing matters here since the creek is seasonal. Spring is ideal if you want reliable water flow, but the park is worth visiting in other seasons too. Summer can get busy on weekends, and parking fills up, so arriving earlier in the day helps. Fall brings fewer visitors and pleasant temperatures for hiking without the heat. Winter depends entirely on whether the mountains have gotten snow or rain.
The drive up from the valley takes about 45 minutes from most of Riverside County, so plan accordingly. Bring water for both of you—the elevation and trails can be deceptive about how much effort they require. There are no amenities beyond picnic areas, so pack what you need for the day.
