Kearny Mesa Dog Park spreads across a generous fenced area in a residential neighborhood near the San Diego International Airport flight path—something to note if your dog is noise-sensitive, but most animals and owners seem unbothered by the occasional jet overhead. The park divides into two sections: a larger area for dogs over 25 pounds and a separate enclosure for small dogs, each with its own entrance, which means you won’t have tiny dogs getting underfoot if you’ve got a standard-sized companion.
Dogs run off-leash throughout both areas. The ground is decomposed granite rather than grass, which drains quickly after rain and is gentler on paws than concrete, though you’ll want to rinse your dog afterward if it’s dusty. Water bowls are available on-site, and there’s shade from a few mature trees, though it’s scattered—bring a hat for yourself and time visits to avoid peak afternoon heat. The park is open sunrise to sunset daily.
The space tends to fill up on weekends and weekday early mornings, so if you prefer calmer play sessions, midday on a weekday works better. Armstrong Street runs along the west side, and the park sits a few blocks from Convoy Street’s commercial corridor. The terrain is flat and easy to navigate. Parking is available in the lot directly adjacent to the park entrance. Peak times draw a reliable crowd of regulars, so it’s a decent spot to socialize a dog that enjoys other canines, though it can get rowdy during popular hours.
