The Kings Canyon Loop starts at the Valley Vista Staging Area in Moraga and takes you through dense forest along the northern edge of the San Leandro Reservoir. The trail itself is well-maintained, making it manageable for dogs of varying fitness levels, though you’ll want to bring plenty of water since the tree cover doesn’t always protect from heat on warmer days.
Dogs must stay on-leash the entire time, which is strictly enforced. This requirement exists partly because of the proximity to the reservoir and partly to protect the wildlife in this area. The lush forest canopy means you won’t get pounded by sun, but it also means the trail can be muddy even days after rain, so plan accordingly if your dog hates getting dirty.
One thing that catches people off guard is the EBMUD trail permit requirement. You’ll need to get this before you go—it’s not something you can sort out at a trailhead kiosk. Most people who regularly hike in the East Bay keep one on hand, but if this is your first time, add a few extra days to your planning.
The route offers a genuine forest experience without feeling remote or isolated. You’re close enough to residential Moraga that you can hear occasional road noise, but once you’re a few minutes into the trail, the reservoir and trees dominate your surroundings. The water views appear periodically as the trail winds through the canyon, giving you natural stopping points if your dog needs a break.
The trail loops back to where you started, so there’s no navigation confusion. Most dogs seem to enjoy the cooler, shaded environment, especially compared to more exposed East Bay trails. Just remember to grab that EBMUD permit before loading up the car.
