Kona Kai San Diego Resort sits right on Shelter Island with direct waterfront access, which means you’re waking up to bay views and the sound of water lapping at the shore. The rooms are genuinely spacious—we had plenty of room to move around without feeling cramped, and there’s real space for a dog to stretch out and settle in for the night.
The location is what really makes this place work if you’re traveling with a dog. You’ve got immediate access to the sandy beaches along Shelter Island, and the resort’s grounds include walking paths that loop around the property. We took our dog out several times a day without having to load up the car or venture far. The beach access is particularly nice because it’s quieter than some of the more crowded San Diego beaches, so there’s less chaos if your dog is reactive around other dogs or people.
The staff handled our dog’s arrival without any fuss or extra fees we didn’t expect. They treated it like a normal part of their day, which honestly makes a huge difference when you’re already managing travel logistics. The rooms themselves are well-maintained, and there’s enough shade from the tropical landscaping that even on hot days, there are cooler spots to hang out outside.
One thing to keep in mind: Shelter Island can get windy, particularly in the afternoon, so if you have a dog that’s sensitive to wind or gets anxious, bring something to help them settle. The island also attracts seagulls and other birds, so if your dog has a strong prey drive, you’ll want to keep them on leash during beach time.
The resort location puts you close to the rest of San Diego’s attractions, but the real draw here is having a dog-friendly base with immediate beach and walking access without feeling like you’re compromising on where you sleep.
