Laguna Campground

468-470 Los Huecos Road, Pine Valley, California 91962

(619) 473-2082

Laguna Campground sits about an hour east of San Diego in the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area, and it’s genuinely one of the best places to escape the coast’s heat without driving too far. You’re looking at elevation around 6,000 feet, which means actual cool nights even in July and August—a real relief if you’ve been dealing with San Diego’s summer warmth.

The campground itself is straightforward and functional. You get pine forest, open meadows, and access to a serious trail network. The Laguna Meadow Trail system is right there, offering everything from gentle walks to longer explorations through the meadows and trees. If you’re an ambitious hiker, you can access the Pacific Crest Trail here—the actual 2,650-mile route that runs all the way from California to Washington. Even just doing a segment of it is kind of cool, knowing you’re on such a historic route.

Mountain biking and horseback riding are popular in the area too, so you’ll see plenty of people gearing up for those activities. The landscape changes with the seasons noticeably—summer brings wildflowers and green meadows, while fall creeps in earlier up here than it does down in the valley.

The campground operates from summer through early fall, which is really the window when the weather works up here. Winters get snow, so this isn’t a year-round spot. It’s one of those places where you actually need to plan your visit around the season rather than just showing up whenever.

Getting there takes about 50 miles of driving from downtown San Diego. You head east on I-8 to the Sunrise Highway exit, then follow that road for roughly 15 miles. You’ll pass the 26 mile marker and find the entrance station, where staff can point you toward available sites and answer questions about trail conditions or what’s open that day.
