Laguna Mountain

Mt Laguna, Mount Laguna, California 91948

Just 40 minutes from downtown San Diego via I-8 east and Sunrise Highway, the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area offers something you won’t find anywhere else in the county. The drive alone is worth it—you’ll watch the landscape shift from desert scrub to a genuine mountain conifer forest with ponderosa pines and firs, elevation gain doing all the work.

Park at the Meadow Information Kiosk after the first cattle guard. There’s parking along both sides of the highway, so you won’t have trouble finding a spot even on weekends. The Big Laguna Mountain Meadows are the main draw here. They’re genuinely stunning, especially in late spring and early summer when wildflowers show up.

If you’re up for a hike, the Sunset Trail winds through pine forest for two miles and passes Water of the Woods, a small reservoir that’s usually reliable for photos if not much actual swimming. The trail connects to the Big Laguna Trail, which gives you options depending on how far you want to go. One of the overlooks along here has a genuinely good view of the meadows below, and on clear days you can actually see all the way to the ocean.

Big Laguna Lake sits to the east if you want to explore in that direction. The whole area is popular with trail runners and day hikers, so you’ll likely see other dogs around. The elevation keeps things cooler than San Diego proper—bring a layer even in summer. The meadows themselves are open and spacious, which is nice if your dog gets anxious on narrow trails. The ground is often soft from pine needles and seasonal moisture, so paws stay relatively comfortable. Sunrise light filtering through the trees makes mornings here worth the early wake-up call.
