Lake George Campground sits right in Mammoth Lakes, just a short walk from the water’s edge in the Eastern Sierra. The campground has 15 campsites spread across a quiet area, with flush toilets and potable water available throughout. It’s the kind of place where you can pitch a tent or park an RV and actually feel like you’ve gotten away from things, not just moved to a different parking lot.
The real draw here is the immediate access to Lake George itself. You can walk down to the shoreline without much fuss, which means your dog gets to splash around and explore the rocky shores. The water’s cold even in summer, but that doesn’t stop most dogs from wading in. The campground welcomes well-behaved dogs, so as long as yours isn’t going to antagonize other campers, you’re good to bring them along.
Being only five to ten minutes from the main Mammoth Lakes Basin means you’re positioned perfectly if you want to venture out during the day. There’s serious hiking nearby—trails lead into alpine terrain with views that make the drive worthwhile. Fishing is solid in the lake if you’re into that. Wildlife watching happens naturally just by being there; you’ll see mule deer and various birds without much effort.
The campground itself is fairly basic, which is actually appealing if you’re tired of overly developed camping areas. No fancy amenities, just the essentials done right. Summer nights get cold at this elevation, so bring layers even if you’re camping in July or August. The setting feels genuinely remote while still being accessible, which is the sweet spot for most people traveling with dogs. You get the mountain experience without feeling like you’re roughing it too hard.
