Lake Natoma, part of Folsom State Recreation Area near Gold River, draws serious rowers and kayakers year-round, but there’s plenty here for dogs too if you know where to look. The lake hosts summer regattas for rowing, sailing, and outrigger canoes, and the water stays busy with kayakers taking advantage of the calm conditions created by Nimbus Dam across the American River.
Dogs can’t access the swimming beaches, which makes sense given all the water sports activity, but you’ll find plenty of spots along the shoreline where your dog can wade and cool off. The picnic areas are dog-friendly, so you can settle in for a few hours without worrying about where your pup hangs out.
The recreation setup here is genuinely useful. Eleven miles of paved bicycle trails loop through the area—great if you want to walk your dog along smooth paths without fighting dirt or rocks. There are also six miles of multi-use trails for a bit more adventure. Two full boat launch ramps operate year-round if you’re bringing your own kayak or small boat, plus a car-top launch area for easier access. Bank and boat fishing are solid throughout the year for rainbow and brown trout, black bass, crappie, and bluegill.
The 5 mph speed limit across the entire lake keeps things relatively quiet and manageable. One group campground is available if you’re planning an overnight trip, giving you options beyond just day visits. Since motorized boating is allowed but heavily restricted by that speed limit, you won’t deal with jet skis roaring past.
Come on a weekday morning if possible—the summer weekends get crowded with competitive rowers and spectators. That’s when you’ll appreciate having multiple trail options to escape the main action and find quieter spots where your dog can actually enjoy the water.
