Spring in Sacramento with your dog: why April works

Sacramento doesn’t always get the credit it deserves as a dog-friendly destination. While the rest of California’s travel scene focuses on coastal towns and mountain resorts, the capital city quietly offers one of the best urban dog experiences in the state — especially right now, in mid-April, when temperatures hover in the comfortable 70s and the city’s legendary tree canopy is in full leaf.

Hit the American River Parkway

The American River Parkway is Sacramento’s crown jewel for dog owners. This 32-mile paved multi-use trail stretches from Old Sacramento all the way to Folsom Lake, winding through riparian habitat along the American River. In April, the river runs strong with Sierra snowmelt, the cottonwoods are leafing out, and we can cover miles without breaking a sweat. Dogs must stay leashed, but there’s so much to sniff along the riverbanks that they won’t mind. Start at Discovery Park where the American and Sacramento rivers meet, or jump on at any of the dozens of access points along the way.

Midtown is made for walking

Sacramento’s Midtown neighborhood is one of the most walkable, dog-friendly urban grids in California. The tree-lined streets — many shaded by enormous elms and valley oaks — make for pleasant strolling, with water bowls outside nearly every shop door. The stretch along J Street and R Street is packed with boutiques, coffee shops, and galleries where dogs are welcomed at outdoor tables. The whole vibe here is relaxed and genuinely dog-friendly in a way that feels natural rather than performative.

Farm-to-fork dining, al fresco

Sacramento earned its reputation as America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital for good reason — and April is when spring menus really start to shine. Many of the city’s best restaurants have outdoor patios where dogs can join us tableside. DogTrekker’s list of dog-friendly Sacramento restaurants and food spots covers everything from craft breweries with sprawling beer gardens to upscale farm-to-table dining. According to Visit Sacramento, the city’s farmers market scene is one of the largest in the state, and several of the Sunday markets welcome well-behaved, leashed dogs.

Off-leash time at Sacramento’s dog parks

After all that leashed walking, our dogs deserve some free-running time. Sacramento has a solid network of dog parks with separate areas for large and small dogs. Granite Dog Park and Bannon Creek Dog Park are two popular picks with locals. Partner Park near Rancho Cordova offers a fenced off-leash area surrounded by mature oaks — a shady relief that will matter more as the season warms up.

Make it a day trip to Folsom

If we’re already on the American River Parkway, it makes sense to keep going east to Folsom. This Gold Country gateway town has its own dog-friendly personality — historic Sutter Street is lined with restaurants, shops, and tasting rooms that welcome dogs on their patios. Folsom Lake State Recreation Area offers miles of trails along the lakeshore where dogs can hike on-leash, and by late April the lake is beginning to warm up for swimming season. We’ve got a complete guide to dog-friendly Folsom if a day trip turns into a full weekend plan.

Why April, specifically

Sacramento’s summer heat is legendary — triple digits are the norm from June through September. But right now, in April, we get all the perks of Sacramento’s outdoor culture without the scorching temps. The city’s famous canopy of 5 million trees is in its spring glory, hotel rates haven’t hit their summer peak, and patio season is just warming up. If Sacramento hasn’t been on our dog-travel radar, now is the time to go — before everyone else figures it out.
