Highway 28, Lake Tahoe, Nevada

Lake Tahoe around Tahoe City offers serious hiking options for you and your dog, and Spooner Lake is the easiest entry point. The Spooner Lake Trail is a 2.1-mile roundtrip that stays beginner-friendly while still feeling like a real mountain experience. You’ll walk through dense evergreen forest with the lake visible through the trees, and the trail gets better with the seasons—wildflowers bloom in spring and summer, then those aspen groves turn brilliant red in fall. The elevation sits at 7,150 feet, which means you’ll notice the thinner air but nothing that should stop a dog in decent shape.

Keep your dog on leash here. The trail shares space with cyclists, and it’s the responsible move for everyone involved. It keeps the atmosphere pleasant for all the hikers and riders you’ll encounter, and your dog stays safe from unexpected bike traffic.

The Spooner Lake Trail also connects to longer routes if you want more adventure. From there, you can push on toward Marlette Lake or tackle the Flume Trail for a more ambitious day. That progression means you could test out the easier section first with your dog and see how they handle the elevation before committing to anything longer.

Bring substantially more water than you think you’ll need. The high altitude combined with the dry mountain air dehydrates dogs quickly—you’ll want water for multiple breaks, not just one fill-up at the trailhead. The lake itself is visible throughout most of the walk, which helps with navigation and mood, but you can’t rely on dipping your dog in it for water breaks since you’re hiking alongside it, not right at its edge for most of the trail.

The parking area has space for multiple cars, and the trail is maintained regularly, so you won’t deal with overgrown sections or confusing junctions. Early morning visits mean fewer cyclists and more chances to see wildlife quietly moving through the forest.
