Step back in time at the Laws Railroad Museum & Historical Site, located just five miles north of Bishop, California. Spanning 11 acres, this open-air museum offers a glimpse into the daily life of early 20th-century Owens Valley residents. Visitors can explore nearly 50 authentic structures, including the original 1883 depot, agent’s house, and locomotive turntable, all filled with artifacts that depict the era’s homemakers, artisans, and townspeople.
A highlight of the museum is the Southern Pacific No. 9, an oil-fired narrow-gauge steam locomotive affectionately known as the “Slim Princess.” This engine served the Southern Pacific Railroad for 33 years and is now on display in the Engine House. The museum also features a collection of antique trains, fire and medical equipment, farming and mining tools, and pioneer gear.
Throughout the year, the museum hosts family-friendly events such as the “Laws Good Old Days” and the holiday-themed “Railroad Express,” offering train rides, live entertainment, and hands-on activities.
Leashed dogs are welcome on the museum grounds, making it a perfect outing for the whole family.
