Step back in time at the Laws Railroad Museum & Historical Site, located just five miles north of Bishop on Highway 395. The 11-acre open-air grounds feel like walking through an actual small town frozen in time, with nearly 50 authentic structures scattered across the property. You can wander through the original 1883 depot, peek into the agent’s house, and explore the locomotive turntable without feeling rushed or corralled through exhibits.
The real centerpiece is the Southern Pacific No. 9, an oil-fired narrow-gauge steam locomotive nicknamed the “Slim Princess.” This engine worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 33 years and now sits in the Engine House, looking exactly like something your dog might sniff at curiously while you study the mechanics. Beyond the locomotive, you’ll find genuine antique trains, fire and medical equipment from that era, plus an honest collection of farming and mining tools and pioneer gear that gives real texture to what daily life actually looked like in early 20th-century Owens Valley.
The museum does more than static display. Throughout the year they host family-friendly events like “Laws Good Old Days” and the holiday-themed “Railroad Express,” which bring in train rides, live entertainment, and hands-on activities that feel genuinely interactive rather than forced. If you’re visiting during one of these events, expect crowds but also a real sense of community and actual things happening.
Leashed dogs can roam the grounds with you, which means you can take your time exploring without worrying about leaving them behind. The setting up here in Inyo County has that high desert quality—dry air, big sky, and enough space that you never feel cramped. Bring water and plan for at least a couple hours; the 11 acres are spread out enough that you’ll do some real walking. Summer heat can be intense, so early morning or late afternoon visits work better.
