Long Canyon Trail

Long Canyon Trail

Long Canyon Trail

Napa, Napa, California

To get to Long Canyon Trail, cross the gate at the corral and follow the old ranch road up Long Canyon. The route is fairly obvious, as it is the path of least resistance up the canyon. You’ll stay in the canyon the entire way up to the top of the watershed, gaining about 1000 feet over the first 3 miles—it’s a real workout early on, so pace yourself.

Once you reach the top of the canyon, turn left and follow the trail above an old pond. Keep following the trail, and it will loop back toward the trailhead. When you see the trail turn left back into Long Canyon, follow it down and it will take you back to the trail within the canyon and return you to your car. The entire loop is about 9.5 to 10 miles, so be prepared to spend some time out here. It’s a good day hike for dogs with decent stamina, though the elevation gain in the first stretch means you’ll want to bring plenty of water for both of you.

Getting there takes some navigation through the back roads. From Yolo County, take Highway 128 toward Lake Berryessa and remain on it until you reach the Berryessa/Knoxville Road. Turn right and continue past Lake Berryessa, crossing both the Pope Creek and Putah Creek bridges at the north end of the lake, then head up into the mountains beyond. The road narrows, roughens, and winds its way up into the canyon. Watch for the eight concrete low-water crossings on Knoxville Road—they’re not difficult but worth knowing about beforehand. You’ll find parking at an old corral on the right side of the road at Mile Marker 28. The trailhead is straightforward once you’re there, making the drive worthwhile for a solid backcountry experience.
